How did you get started in Triathalon?
I will never forget the day I decided to do a triathlon. I was 9 months pregnant, 205 pounds and miserable. It was then, standing on that scale, weighing MORE than my husband (now ex-husband) that I decided to do a triathlon by the time my soon-to-be-born son turned one.
I started training only to discover I was very sick from Grave's Disease and hyperthyroidism. I weighed less than 140 pounds, and was so weak I couldnt turn the shower off! My resting heart rate was 145 beats per minute! My doctor put me on medication and told me to rest and this disease was likely cause by stress.
I filed for divorce, took medication till I was in remission and started training in April of 2005. I finished my first race (The Acworth Womens Triathlon) in August in under 2 hours, it was the single most amazing day of my life.

Favorite Training or Race Experience: Finishing! You never know what you are capable of until you put yourself in the thick of it. During my first race I couldn’t believe how amazing and supportive all of the women racers were/are. The semi-pro women who had finished way ahead of everyone were coming back through the course to cheer us all on, and even ran with us back across the finish line. Would MEN do that??

Life/Sport Philosophy: Set high goals for yourself. Goals you think are impossible and never give up on yourself. Lastly, keep smiling.

Athletic Highlights and your Race Goals: Well, now that I can call myself a "triathlete" I would have to say that for the first time in my life I enjoy running. I look forward to my runs, to the high, to pushing myself - I had no idea how much I was going to love this sport. New goals are to get faster, build my stamina so I can enjoy the race a little more instead of just finishing it. ha ha.

Favorite Fuel: So far it's been a banana and a powerbar. Half way through the bike portion I suck down a gel, that is whatever I dont get all over me while doing so!

|
Advice you’d give to other female triathletes: We women put everyone else first, and our needs last. Put yourself first. Go out for a run and feel guilt-free cause you are taking care of yourself. Forget about your skinny jeans and think about your self-esteem and what you have done lately, besides dieting, to boost it.

Other interesting facts: I am a single mom with a 2 year old son.
